Gone Fishin'

Calvin Howard has been at Tricon Metals for 15 years. His title is Maintenance Lead Man but he does so much more. He has worked at our two other locations in Elko and Chicago to install burning machines, and is on call to assist them with maintenance issues. Calvin is responsible for any and all phases of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic maintenance at the Birmingham facilities. This might range from changing a light bulb to the difficult task of changing the wire rope cables on any of our 19 overhead cranes. He is on call day or night; his pager is never turned off.
Calvin has one great talent that he’s known for in the area, fishing. He has been fishing since he was 6 years old and started with a cane pole down by the creek. He sleeps and breaths fish. Every weekend and 2-3 times a week you can find Calvin and his wife Brenda at their place on Logan Martin where they catch an average of 40-50 crappie. In one tournament he won $750 and has a collection of more than 16 trophies. Among his other accomplishments, Calvin has been instrumental in the trophies Tricon has been awarded at the Pig Iron Barbeque for Children’s Hospital.
Calvin has had a Fish Fry at Tricon for the past six years. In order for the employees in Chicago to get a taste of a real southern fish fry, Calvin caught and carried fish to the plant in Illinois. He does about three tournaments a year for Tricon’s customers, and cooks for his church several times a year. He once asked a great fisherman what his secret was to catching fish. The fisherman told him to just “keep it in the water”. Calvin has been doing that ever since.
